Sunday Set List 7/4/10
What a day! Yesterday was nuts! I don’t think I’ve ever felt a Sunday go by as fast as this past weekend. It was a total blur. Here’s how it started…
I walk into Brian’s office, my boss, to ask him about something or another. He then says he’s got something to tell me and that I might want to sit down. He goes on to tell me that James David Carter, who led worship this weekend, wasn’t going to be able to get to the church until 8:00. Well, we begin rehearsal at 7:00! It was something like the director of the Peachtree Road Race(the largest road race in the world) attends Buckhead Church, and that person asked if Buckhead Church could get someone to sing the national anthem and then have the pastor of Buckhead Church pray before the race started. And they asked James to sing. Now, this was totally not James who decided to do this and push us back an hour. The Music Director at Buckhead Church actually said that he could cancel it so our schedule wouldn’t be messed up. That was amazing of him to say that. But we also knew that it was a great opportunity for the church and didn’t want them to lose that chance. So…
We pushed back our rehearsal one hour!
So our Sunday looked like this. The band showed up at 8:00, got sound checked and started rehearsal at 8:15. We purposefully only did 3 songs because we knew time would be tight. The band actually rolled right through all 3 songs without stopping once. Then we immediately did mic checks for everyone else who needed it, and we were done! It was such a blur. We were done right at 9:00, 30 minutes before our 1st service starts. Then, 30 minutes later, we ran the 1st service and it went great! Then the 2nd service was over before I knew it, and it went great as well!
My morning literally felt like it went by just as quickly as you read that paragraph. It was insane. Somehow, by the grace of God, we pulled off the services without a hitch. Well, we did realize that they slightly changed up the arrangement to one of the songs after rehearsal, but not until they were in the middle of the song in the 1st service. But it still turned out fine.
Anyways, here’s the deets…
As I mentioned earlier, James David Carter led worship. Then we had Cody Preston and Matt Podesla on guitar. Jon Sheats on bass. And Scotty Lockridge on drums. No keys, and no background vocalists this weekend. A little bit of a smaller band, but they sounded great.
For the set list…
God is Alive – Steve Fee
Bless Your Name – Eddie Kirkland
From the Inside Out – Hillsong United
Like I said, the band was able to roll right through all of these songs in one shot during rehearsal. They’re songs that are really familiar to us, which we also did on purpose because of the whole time thing.
And that was it. But again, it went by so fast.
That evening, we canceled our 6:00pm service because of it being 4th of July. So instead, we had our first ever 4th of July “Grill ‘n Chill”. We had a tailgating party! It was so much fun. We did I think 2 of these last year and they were a lot of fun. We rolled out a 40foot trailer, set up a little sound system on it, had Justin Owens and Brian Preston emcee, and had a couple of fun games. To kick things off, we had our first ever hot dog eating contest. It was a “eat all the hot dogs you can in 6 minutes” frenzy! Everyone loved it. There’s nothing more fascinating that watching a couple of people literally shove hot dogs into their mouth. The winner, was actually a scrawny high school kid! It came to do a one minute eat off because of a tie at the end of the 6 minutes, but he pulled it off. He out ate a couple of grown men. Then we played the Minute to Win It inspired “PIn Head”, where people place as many clothespins anywhere on their head in 1 minute. We actually had 3 women play. The winner put 26 clothespins on her head! We’re talking mouth, nose, ears, hair, anything that is attached to your head. It was pretty funny, and I’d imagine painful. Then we had a huge game of water balloon toss. I think we had 40 teams join in on that one. There’s few things funnier than watching other people get soaked trying to catch a water balloon.
It was a lot of fun, but again felt like a blur. Really, this whole week felt really fast, but it was a good week. Now I’m ready for things to slow down a little bit. At least for a day or two, if I’m lucky.
